POLITICS IN KARATE
Bullshit, is the word that the Okinawan generation after WWII (1945) uses instead of words like discussion, a speech, conference or politics. The reason being is because wars are fought by men who are of a lower economic background and their language is rough but straight to the point. Disregarding political correctness. This is the English Taketo Nakamura and his generation learned from soldiers, sailors, and marines ... not from English professors. So BS is a term used when the situation is of a political nature. For example, the rank rokudan and below are a rank where one works, you actually teach a class, and do every thing a white green or brown belt does, they do knuckle push ups, so do you. Rokudan, godan, yondan , sandan, nidan and shodan are considered a working Sensei. A political rank is given when one has done a lot for karate, for instance if you are maybe 70 years old and been doing it for 50 years or more, so then a group decides that you need to be a nanadan (7th), not necessarily because of your physical ability but for your loyalty and what you have done for karate. This is a political rank, or in the English that was learned from GI's by the Senseis of Nakamura's and Odo's generation is referred to as bull shit, ( a political rank ) not because of what you can do, but for what you have done for your art as you get older and are still active in karate as best as you can.
BS or politics are an important part of karate. I had a situation where politics was rampant ... too much of it. When I got to Purrto Rico I could not teach a class where rank, technique, age, kata and everything else were a hindrance because of politics (BS). So what I did was stop the class and said "okay everyone move to this side of the dojo," and then I said "okay, what were you saying"? They continued playing the blame game and I joined in saying ridiculous things such as I am the supreme being great grandmaster of the galaxy and my dog Blackie is my master, then I said this is bullshit. Everyone that wants to practice karate move to that side of the dojo. Those who want to keep talking BS stay here on this side. They began to see the common sense.
Later we went to a restaurant and ate and drank beer and talked nicely, and then the politics returned. I said, "this is the best place for politics." We have a friendly discussion, drink, eat and get things off our chests in a friendly civil productive manner. This is not the proper place to break out the tunfas, nunchakus, kamas and practice our kata ... the dojo is the proper place. Then they saw that politics is important, even real bullshit is important. After that BS event, things started going smoothly, realizing 100% of good karate is in the dojo and a good bullshit session is over a beer and good food.
Orlandito Rodriguez is responsible for Okinawa Kenpo in Puerto Rico. When his Sensei's quit teaching Okinawa Kenpo in Puerto Rico 30 years ago, Orlando never quit Okinawa Kenpo, he taught as best as he could and he gave it 100%. He always had Shigeru's pictures in his dojo always saying that someday someone who knows Kina Sensei will come and shows us the true way of Okinawa Kenpo like Shigeru Nakamurs taught. Then the prayers of Puerto Rico's Okinawa Kenpo were answered, the Neco appeared, out of the sky with a roar that was deafening and when the mouth of the fire spitting dragon opened and his feet touched the sacred ground of Puerto Rico, everyone saw that he was truly an envoy from the mythical islands of the Ryukyu. It was the Neco (cat) that Taketo Nakamura the grandmaster of Okinawa law of the fist, son of Shigeru Nakamura supreme instructor and founder of Okinawa Kenpo. The Neco, a direct disciple of Seikichi Odo, the senior student of Shigeru Nakamura. The Neco showed to a chosen few in Puerto Rico the way.
Only God could have arranged these events, thanks to Orlandito's prayers. God works in mysterious ways. His prayers were answered, his dream came true, real original Okinawa Kenpo in the big island called puerto Rico, or as the Japanese call a big island, Oki Nawa ... and now with real karate, Puerto Rico is no longer just a paradise, but a SUPER PARADISE
