Traditional karate or karate jutsu is not for bragging, tournaments, ego, or showing off ... it is a way of life. A lot of people think a piece of paper (certificate) makes you a karate master ... this is wrong, It is what is inside of you that makes you. Karate, as a way of life, is easy, just do it all the time. Just like any other thing you enjoy. I know people who love to run ... they just do it. They don't try to be the best, get trophies, certificates and awards, they just do it for the fun and love of running. If you don't love it, leave it. On the that subject, when it comes to Okinawa Kenpo just do it and don't worry about the consequences, because they will all be good. Do the basics as we were taught in Okinawa. Do the bogu kumite and the kata and all the other training as taught by the real masters who kept it original. The greatest offense in karate is to ask to get promoted. This is like begging. If you deserve to be promoted, you will be promoted. On the other extreme, if you refuse a promotion, it's not good. I did this once and I was told to either get a black belt or leave. Ever since then I tried to stay away from promotions, but I learned to just say "hai Sensei" when offered a higher rank. There were other karateka that could do every thing better than me but I just never felt like I deserved a higher rank ... I'm happy just doing karate. I can't understand why people aren't happy just doing karate. The thrill of kumite, kata and plain ole training. The only people I know who don't care about promotions, tournaments, certificates, titles and that idiotic bullshit POLITICS are the people who trained in Okinawa under an Okinawan Sensei. This is the real
karate way. Again this is my opinion and experience. In 1964, when I arrived in Okinawa (for me heaven), our commanding officer must have known that we were going to war. So all new arrivals were told to go sign up for karate classes in the village of Futenma Okinawa. We had to pay 25 cents through special services and so I did and the rest is history.
Why it is important for the annual Okinawa Kenpo meeting in the first weekend of March. Reasons are:
1 - Because of good weather and it helps in the unification of Okinawa Kenpo in the way where we get to know one another and other Senseis of Okinawa Kenpo,
2 - this way there will not be any favoritism, such as if a dojo happens to be owned by a rich Sensei. Then he can have a lot of influence with money. Or, if a Sensei has a talent for talking and and getting his way through words, this also has a lot of influence. So in March money and words will have an equally positive influence on all of us, not just me,
3 - this way we can have a real Shiai Okinawa style like Shigeru Nakamura did and intended for karate to be like,
4 - this way we can make sure we all keep Okinawa Kenpo original and pure with very little expense to us as individuals ... all it will cost is the round trip to south Texas. "Okinawa West" is what in the martial arts community calls George West, Texas,
5 - also, if we keep it this way with our annual meeting, Okinawa Kenpo and the Nakamura lineage and way of ancient training can continue to be carried on without change for future generations,
6 - and the dojos under Taketo Nakamura are known as a pure karate of Okinawa. There is much to learn and to take back to your students. Also it is a good way to weed out fakes and eliminate politics. So don't add anything and never change the Ryu (method) all systems of traditional karate are good ... ours is one of them ... and I am not talking about sports karate,
7 - Bogu. Where do you get it ?
Head. 719-226-6443
Chest. "
Gloves. "
Groin. 866-365-3636
Or call Daniel San in Puerto Rico
787-452-5165 for further info.
8 - the bogu was introduced by Shigeru Nakamura after WWII 1945 because he saw that karate was starting to change the old ways of realism and starting to become a sport instead of a way of life, a discipline and life saving art. In the use of the bogu one can have a real fight and not get seriously hurt or killed after being hit in the neck, throat, chest, pelvis, groin , eyes and the other countless Dim-Mak points on the torso.
When One does kata you are actually practicing to hit Dim-Mak points, (killing points on the body) the more you practice kata, the more proficient you will be at Dim-Mak. because that is one of the purposes of kata ... real kata, not tournament BS.
9 - If you know of anyone who wants the newsletter, email to nfdojo@yahoo.com and say I want the newsletter, this way I can forward it to Sensei Arnold Saenz the newsletter editor.
Until the next newsletter, good luck and keep practicing
