Legends of Okinawa
Once there was a dragon in Naha harbor, every spring he would awaken and go ashore eating the people, King Sho sent for help from the emperor of china, the emperor sent help in the form of a kara chi chi, "lion dog." The dog was very small but with a very loud bark and roar. When the dragon came out of the harbor every spring the kara chi chi would give out a loud bark and roar then the dragon got scared and went back under and into the sea. This happened every spring so as soon as the dragon would see the kara chi chi and before it barked and roared the dragon would disappear. Then one day after many years of faithful service the kara chi chi died. So King Sho ordered statues of the kara chi chi to be made and instructed the people to put the kara chi chi statues on top of their houses facing towards Naha harbor where the dragon slept. To this date you can go to Okinawa and see the kara chi chis on roofs of houses facing Naha harbor keeping the dragon at bay.
Around November 8-15, I plan to go to Okinawa. My talented and gifted son Gonzo plans to go if his busy schedule allows it and one other black belt that is planning to go with me so far. The plan is to stay in Nago the city where grandmaster Taketo Nakamura lives. Last year it cost me approximately $2,000 for the cost of the plane ticket, food, lodging and transportation. Call me if you want to go in Nov. If you do decide to go, leave your politics behind.
The three kia's of Okinawa kenpo.
1) Ai (pronounced like the word "eye") is the sound of punching,
2) I (pronounced like the letter "e"),
3) Te (pronounced like the syllable in telephone) te-le-phone.
The sounds of I , ai and te are only the first syllables. The last syllable is saaah, as in, Sahara desert, so when you yell (kiai) if it is a punch it's (ai--saaah) if you kick its
(te---saaah) and if it's a throw hold or breakor another technique it's (I ---saaah). The first sound (syllable) is done at the exact moment of the execution of the strike. The second sound is done after the execution of the strike. The ai, I and te sounds give you the motivation and energy that open the gate for those muscles being used in your punch kick or throw. These are mantras, karate yoga are one and the same. So we also use mantras as a kia. Let me explain further ... when you make the sound ha ha ha ha ha, this is a sound of laughter, the sound of happiness, or if you cry or sob it makes you sad or depressed these are only some examples. The sense of smell also motivates certain muscles. For example, if you smell food cooking, it makes you hungry and the hunger muscles kick in. That is the first sound. On the second sound, saaah let's say you are working and you lift a very heavy object you grunt hold your breath then after you did it and set it down you go, aaaah, this sound makes your
muscles relax. So when we punch we go, ai saaah. The first sound is the call to charge, the second sound is R&R (rest and relaxation).
If anyone is interested, some bogu (fighting gear) is available for $800. Originally purchased from Shureido and in relatively nearly new condition. These are no longer being made and is your change to get a 2 man set consisting of helmet, chest protector, and groin protector. If interested, send an email to me or arnoldos@msn.com for further details.
