Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kobudo Renme
Taketo Nakamura - Grand Master
Nick Flores - President (keeper of the faith)
Every one send me your phone number short history of yourself and e-mail address. My email address is nfdojo@yahoo.com and my phone number is (361) 449-7766 sensei Neco Medes Flores.
Okinawa Kenpo in the future, the present state of Okinawa Kenpo, is being taught the old way. Sensei Odo, in his prime, taught many of us correctly.
Some people have changed the training to suit themselves.
An okinawan sensei who learned the old way told me that when he came to America he had to drop certain things from training because it was to rough for American civilians, in Okinawa it was all marines and army special forces and old time Okinawa karate.
Then when these people came back to the states after a year in okinawa and began to teach karate in the states most changed karate to suit the american public ... I did not like it. So I kept okinawa karate with all the trimmings and the things that I didn't understand, regardless of my feelings.
Some of the things that were eliminated by most returning G I's were bogu kumite, kotekitae, proper bowing, proper meditation, ancestor worship, makiwara training, kata history, real bunkai training, equipment used in the ancient past, Mei Kata of the 7 & 8 th century, Habu walking, Castle walking, karate mantras, and many other things that are of the old ways mainly because american students didn't like them and eventually they would quit. So the senseis, for profit and to survive financially, had to teach the easy glamourous stuff only.
For the old senseis of Okinawa, karate was their religion, they practiced karate during the night and in grave yards of their sensei on occasions. These type of senseis are far and few in between. There are no more of them outside of our grand master Taketo Nakamura. These types are considered by some as crazy or a cult. The only one that I know about is Taketo Nakamura.
All of the Okinawan senseis had a day job, sensei odo was a refrigeration repair man, he started as a shoe shine boy when he began to teach. Then he worked for the military base as a laborer moving up to refrigeration. Anyone after 1979 didn't get the proper training from sensei odo because of his deteriorating health.
At that time we were under the grand master of Okinawa Kenpo Taketo Nakamura -as now- the only Grand Master of Okinawa Kenpo. Anyone else who claims to be the grand master is mistaken. It's like you can say you are the supreme exalted grand master of the universe, in okinawa they will only politely smile, and politely agree with you, but at the same time thinking "this guy is a nut ... just humor him." Sensei Odo's way of brushing you off was to say, "pretty nice"
The first sensei that I know of to go to Okinawa paying out of his own pocket to pay respect to sensei Odo was Vic Coffin, as a civilian. This was un-heard of in those days. I don't care what Vic Coffin thinks of me, good or bad he has been very dedicated to Okinawa Kenpo and sensei Odo in his own way. In my opinion, he is A-OK.
So for right now the grand master is Taketo Nakamura, his son is next in line. I am president, the duties of my office are to preserve the old ways of Okinawa Kenpo triditions, customs and old time training, and take all the flack.
My son Gonzalo is next in line, as president and keeper of the faith and enforcer of the old ways of Okinawa Karate, whether he wants to or not because he has been active since 1972 in Okinawa Kenpo, not by choice but by manifest destiny. He was trained and been bred in Okinawa Kenpo, my other son also, but Gonzalo is "number 1 son." His son and daughter are born and bred into Okinawa Kenpo also.
So for the nest 100 yrs or so, Okinawa Kenpo and the Nakamura Okinawa Kenpo lineage from Naha Bushi Sakiyama 499 yrs ago, and extending to the 7th and 8th century with Mei kata of the ancient Ryukyku Uchi Nachu is in good hands.
We now can count in the Ryukyu dialect (hogen uchi nacho)
1 - tichi
2 - tachi
3 - michi
4 - iuchi
5 - i chi chi
6 - muchi
7 - nanachi
8 - ya a chi
9 - ku ku nu chi
10 - tu
Here is the meaning of Okinawa Kenpo karate Kobudo Renme
Okinawa = the island of Okinawa
Kenpo = fist law
Karate = empty hand
Kobudo = old warrior ways
Renme = organization or association
Technically, this mean any okinawan martial art. So this means if you wish to retain your style such as Shoryn Ryu, Goju Ryu, Motobu Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Isshin Ryu, etc. we can be your guide to the ancient karate past of okinawa's martial arts, to be a member you only have to recognize Taketo Nakamura as the grand master of Okinawa Kenpo and practice your okinawan art in the old way.
WOMEN'S SECTION
Elodia P Flores 361-449-1374 (phone) birth 30 April 1945, Senior woman in Okinawa Kenpo Sensei for all women in Okinawa Kenpo,
Miss Sensei as she is referred to, is of the old school, you do not question, you only obey. The only question you may ask is "may I go to the bath room?" or "may I drink Water?" And the only reply you can make is "hai sensei." Out of class you can talk her ears off while remembering she is still your sensei. She began karate Dec. of 1965.
You've probably heard of Miss America, Miss California, Miss Texas, etc, no? she has the women's first and only title of Miss Sensei. She teaches kids, all of her student's either don't have parents, their dad is serving prison time, or just street kids. She talks to them in a stern way making them realize that their education is important. Her students are very impressionable 10 year olds and under.
Miss Sensei has brought kids up from F's to C's and from B's to A's. She teaches like she was in a WWII Kamakazi Training Program. One of het Senseis in Okinawa was, Sensei Hedio Henzan,
Sensei Henzan was a Kamakazi pilot trainee, he was 14 yrs old at the time. He was scheduled to do his duty in the fall of 1946. The war ended in 1945. Thus terminating his Bushido (Samurai Warrior philosophy) training. His job was indoctrination and testing Zeros and airplane mechanic. After that training, they would fly off into the wild blue yonder on a one-way trip ... their last words "BONZAI".
After the war, he became a student of Shigeru Nakamura, along with Odo Maehara, Oyata and of course others.
This attitude and training was passed on to Miss Sensei through her Okinawan senseis, Odo, Henzan, Maehara, (and a student and friend of Master Choki Motobu) Nakamoto Sensei 80 yrs old in 1976. In Machinato Okinawa, Nakamoto Sensei would take us to practice their religion in his ancestral family tomb Of which Choki Motobo was a relative. The women would bring fruit as offering to the spirits, we would all sit in a seizan (the way one sits in Karate) and sensei Nakamoto would ask the ancestor spirits to accept these gifts of fruit and be kind enough for the spirits to watch our kata. Males performed kata and females prepared food. After a kata demo for the spirits, we would have a picnic and sensei Nakamoyo would lecture everyone. He would also hold class for us in his dojo which was in a small field of sugarcane and vegetables. To our sons it was all fun ... what do you expect from 5 & 7 year old boys? From Miss Sensei it was not all that strange. She grew up in the cotton fields of south Texas. We, being catholic Mexican, were used to if you didn't pick your quota in the cotton fields of texas you were whipped right then and there. This was common practice in our youth, so when Miss sensei practiced karate in Okinawa it wasn't all that hard, even when she got knocked out.
Only once, she knocked out a Marine Capt in bogu kumite. I will not mention his name name because he is pretty known in the karate world and my desire is not to embarrass him. Ha-ha-ha. And if any of you old timers know about this don't say nothing.
Miss Sensei Flores -- sayonara
P.S.
with regard to an extraordinary email I received recently:
A day to remember, this is truly a historic day. We can unite okinawa Kenpo so it can be passed on to future generations. I am so happy you are coming, as we grow more mature, not older, --- we must unite to do our part in helping future generations to be good use full citizens whether we are Americans or not. I met this young man from Bosnia Hertzagovinia. He told me that when they were fighting that war during President Clinton's term, that Christians and Moslems were killing each other, but in the karate world in that war torn country, Moslems and Christians would train to gather, as battles were being fought all around them. This is proof of how important okinawan karate is. This young man is from Uechi Ryu. I met him in Okinawa in Nov of 2010.
