July news letter
Keeping your students, without compromising your principles. In our case teaching Okinawa Kenpo as Shigeru Nakamura taught Sensei Odo.
Sensei Odo had a good system of teaching. His favorite sayings were: can do, pretty soon, pretty nice, one more time ( mo I Kai ). He always encouraged a student and never getting angry or losing it. And the rare times he was wrong, and I pointed it out, he was grateful. There were sometimes chaotic situations, such as a riot in the dojo, a free for all, initiated by, I won't mention names, to protect the guilty, but his initials are George Colon, AKA Karate Colon.
We all have different methods ... mine is talk softly, be nice and do the daily routines that Sensei Odo did, warm ups, basic punches blocks and kicks, bogu kumite, kata, hit machiwara, kick bag, meditate, do the ancestor worship routine, and go home. There is no need to change this type of training, every one can do it whether you are 7 or 70. I've had students with 4 by-passes, stroke, mentally deranged, in walkers, allergic to every thing, wanting to kill someone, but the one that really sticks out is the 9 year old that would hear voices. Every one of these were cured.
Doing the regular routine that is the real Okinawa Kenpo can be very healthy. Take me for example, I was born in 1943 and not to many people can keep up with me. My lifestyle has always been outdoors, from birth, born in back of a cotton picking wagon in the fields of south Texas. Raised on a farm, always working outdoors. Joined the Marines in 1964, and more outdoors for 20 years, retired in 1984, and started working construction. Now I have a fencing crew where we work in 100+ degree weather and it ain't really hot yet ... it's only July. What I am getting at is karate was made for the type of person that works outdoors. But now-a-days instead of them doing Okinawa Kenpo after work, workers now-a-days are doing barbecue, beer, marijuana, all kinds of self destructive activities such as partying excessively. All those self destructive activities could be replaced with outdoor sports, such as running, even fishing. Or you could do Okinawa Kenpo in the proper prescribed way.
Okinawa Kenpo when done properly, can be very healthy for all ages, all kinds of physical conditions the reason is because the warm ups as taught by Shigeriu Nakamura are a isoteric type of yoga exercise used by yogis of long ago. The first part of all kata have a significance meaning, for example, the first move of naihanchi shodan is to put energy in to your lower tantuen. And women place the right hand in front of an energy point below your navel. Another is in gojushiho ni, the right fist sitting on top of your left palm, is a move to get through guard dogs undetected. This is an art of an obscure isoteric yoga. Gogen Yamagushi did a lot of these while meditating, kata has a lot of spiritual meaning. Sounds called ju mon are an important part. I have known people who make themselves sicker than they already are. For example one Vietnam vet injured his back and claimed an in service injury. He got approved by the VA so that he could get money. But he had to keep proving he was disabled, and, over the years, he actually became disabled. Another was opposite the same situation ... a sensei was shot 11 times with a machine gun while he was serving as a marine, he automatically got 100% disability. He was laid up on a bed for a year before he could move. When he was able to move he would fall off his bed during the night when the nurses were away and exercise on the floor rolling around crawling and clawing himself up back on the bed. Around that time he took college courses and eventually earned a teaching certificate. Now he has 0% disability does his karate classes and lifts weights. The point is you can make yourself well or make yourself sick.
